Christmas doesn’t mean party celebrations, presents and jolly family gatherings to everyone!

Staff from Wigan based escorted tours & hotel operator, Shearings Holidays, got into the festive spirit this year to raise money for local charities and instil some much needed festive cheer for those who need it.
Because every child deserves a fabulous Christmas; Shearings this year funded the make-up and donation of 25 ‘essential food hampers’ for the Wigan Youth Zone Christmas party. The event, which took place on 23rd December, benefits families from across the borough. Shearings staff visited the Wigan Youth Zone on Tuesday to deliver the hampers and give Wigan’s youth their early Christmas presents. The company also held a Christmas raffle, where staff paid £1 per ticket to raise vital funds for the charity, before everyone breaks for Christmas.
John Harker MBE, General Manager at Wigan Youth Zone said: ‘It is fantastic having Shearings as a Founder Patron of the Youth Zone, they really get what we are trying to achieve supporting young people in Wigan and Leigh so I wasn’t surprised to hear that they had got into the Christmas spirit by making hampers to give out to families at our Christmas dinner’.
‘Well done and thank you to all the team at Shearings’
This follows on from a number of fundraising projects by members of staff, aiming to raise money to support charities from across the community.
Shearings remembered the Wigan’s homeless by donating money to buy items for ‘The Brick Collection’; a local charity, which provides food and shelter for the homeless. The generous donations were used to buy almost 350 items of food and toiletries including potatoes, carrots, custard, toothpaste, beans, soap, and mince pies, which were delivered to the charity by two wonderful members of staff.
Meanwhile, the company also raised money for Wigan Hospice after staff in the Miry Lane head office, held a Christmas jumper day on Friday 18th December, with many employees donning their festive themed Christmas jumpers to raise funds and help the charity.
Gary Speakman, Group Financial Director at Shearings said: ‘We are committed to supporting causes that benefit the Wigan community throughout the year but Christmas is a truly special time. Fundraising for ‘The Brick’, ‘Wigan Hospice’ and ‘Wigan Youth Zone’ feels more important than ever at this time of the year. A big thank you goes to all of our wonderful staff for their generous donations, enthusiastic support and hard work in actually making up the hampers.’
